Want to know what’s fresh in the world of kitchen design for 2022? Here are 7 Germanic design trends to consider including in your new kitchen project.
When it comes to setting Kitchen design trends, nobody’s more on point than our friends in Germany.
This is because brands like Nobilia are not only industry giants, they’re also pure-bred kitchen Specialists.
Compare this to say, Howdens or Ikea (who are Generalists– i.e. they sell a bit of everything) and it’s easy to see why the stylists in Germany are setting the trends, not following them.
It usually takes Generalists in the UK a few years to catch up stylistically, so peeking into what the German market is up to is a great way to get ahead of the curve.
That said, here are 7 of the latest style innovations from our Nobilia 2022 Collection you can include in your new German kitchen design today (and in your English design in 3-5 years)
In the hustle and bustle of daily life it’s easy to feel disconnected from the natural world (especially so if you live in a city). It’s no wonder, therefore, we gravitate towards nature when we want to unwind.
Adding planter units into your kitchen design helps do just that. It’s not only a great way to invite the outdoors in, but the integrated UV grow lights also lets you cultivate your own herb garden right in your own kitchen – it doesn’t get much fresher than that!
This concept stretches much further than home gardening units however – check out our ‘2022 Natural Living Kitchens’ for materials and textures specifically designed to help your home give Mother Nature a hug (no matter where you live)

Striking designs don’t need to shout, and less is often more.
As ever, the devil is in the detail, and with deep tones making a big comeback the need to accent your design accordingly has never been greater.
Take this new ‘Easytouch Fjord Blue’ kitchen for instance – when paired with a darker front colour like this, Steel or Black trims would quickly make this design feel cold and unwelcoming.
Enter our new Brass Grip Rail colour! A constant theme in this handleless kitchen, it gives it precisely the visual lift the design needs, without looking too overdressed or ‘glam’.
Pair this with Gold/Brass tap or another matching accessory, and you’re cooking on gas.
Accenting like this is a great way to add another dimension to any design, as it works with kitchens of all sizes.
New colours are always exciting to see, and we’re pleased to report the 2022 Collection has been no exception.
In addition to the new ‘Fjord Blue’ door, we’ve also seen the addition of ‘Mineral Green’ and last year ‘Rust Red’ into the Easytouch range – all deep, characterful colours with a huge amount of design tea, just waiting to be spilled.
There have also been new entries in the Natural Living materials too; ‘Concrete Sand Effect’ and ‘Oak Montreal Reproduction’ to name a few, telling us that there’s still plenty of room for nature in our kitchens too.
The classics are still going strong of course – warm &neutral matt tones are always a good call, and there’s nothing wrong with a white gloss kitchen (if that’s what you’re into!)
If you like the idea of one of the bolder colours but aren’t quite brave enough to use it on your full kitchen, why not consider using it as a second colour in your palette?
This is called ‘two-toning’ your kitchen and is a classic design hack to create a dynamic and intriguing space. It’s become so common in fact, that most of our kitchens are now ‘two-tone’ designs.

Ok, time to address the elephant in the room.
Design tricks and fancy new colours aside, there’s a reason the kitchens in our images are so eye-catching and intriguing.
If you look closely you’ll see why – it’s all about space. Specifically, how (and when) it’s used.
That means creating space, just as much as filling it.
As any music aficionado will tell you, a melody is shaped by rests just as much as the notes within it.
In other words, the notes you don’t play are just as important as the notes you do play.
The same is true for design – knowing when to stop one area(or colour) to give way to another, or (for instance) how to spot where to adjust unit depths to add an extra dimension to your space is what sets our German kitchen designs apart from the rest.
This alone isn’t enough however; the finished result must also be practical and functional, as well as being a good fit for your space, whilst still keeping all the mainstays of a working kitchen design at the forefront – adequate storage, worktop space, a safe and efficient working area, social aspects etc.
Naturally this takes a practiced hand to perfect, so why not enlist the help of a skilled designer to help you realise your designs full potential.
Function and beauty go hand in hand when it comes to German kitchen design, but at the heart of it all lies one unifying principle: innovation
And this isn’t slowing down in 2022.
Above you can see just a few of the cutting-edge solutions offered in our 2022 Collection – from cleverly crafted internal solutions to the uniquely ingenious wall hanging system, organising your home’s most functional room has never been more exciting!
It doesn’t stop there though, the clever R&D bods in Germany are consistently breaking new ground in the function department, so why not speak to a designer to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes – and don’t worry, our German kitchens are just as eye-catching on the inside as they are on the outside.
After all, who says storage needs to be boring; why can’t it be beautiful too?
It’s not all about the furniture innovations in 2022 –appliance trends are shifting too, with a new demand surfacing for appliances that can keep up with the ever-evolving approach to kitchen design.
A great example of this is the BORA downdraft hob system; its integrated extractor means installing a hob on a kitchen island doesn’t then come with the troublesome problem of a bulky overhead extractor, a design feature that has fallen quote strongly out of fashion in recent years (not to mention being a real pain to install if you have high or sloping ceilings)
This, in turn, means that your island is much more accessible from a design perspective, and can be treated as both a social and a cooking space without the added concern of ventilation.
Boiling taps from manufacturers like Quooker are also becoming increasingly popular, thanks to their modern style and incredible practicality – great for getting rid of that old kettle, making them super practical in smaller kitchens that don’t have much worktop real-estate to spare.
In recent years it’s become increasingly common to see social areas built into kitchen designs - a well-placed breakfast bar can immediately transform a cooking space into a much more social arena.
This is still going strong in 2022, however with increasing pressure on seating to step up to the plate and offer a solution for full-on dining, rather than just a raised perch to enjoy your morning coffee at.
As more flats are built, the size of the average UK home is getting smaller - and thus the need for a design that offers both a kitchen and dining space has been on the rise too.
Ultimately, these shared areas shouldn’t be any less stylish than their segregated counterparts, which is why our 2022 Collection also offers Living Furniture elements to perfectly match in with your kitchen. Who would say no to a beautiful Media Centre or Sideboard to help furnish your chic new apartment, especially when matched with your beautiful new designer German Kitchen?
